About Fayette County Animal Control & Shelter
Fayette County Animal Control & Shelter works to protect the welfare of animals in the community. Their team rescues lost or abandoned pets, provides safe shelter, ensures animals receive proper care, and works to place them in loving homes. They also support public safety by responding to animal‑related concerns and promoting responsible pet ownership.
What Volunteers Will Do
This orientation will introduce young professionals to the shelter’s mission and prepare participants for hands‑on volunteer work—specifically dog‑walking and enrichment support. During the session, volunteers will:
-
Learn shelter safety guidelines and dog‑handling basics
-
Tour the facility and meet the staff
-
Understand how to read dog body language and reduce stress for shelter pets
-
Practice proper leash techniques and kennel protocols
-
Begin supervised dog‑walking and enrichment activities
This training ensures volunteers feel confident, safe, and prepared before working independently with the dogs.
Why This Matters — Benefits for Volunteers
Volunteering with the shelter offers meaningful personal and professional benefits:
-
Make a direct impact by improving the daily lives of shelter dogs
-
Build community connections with other young professionals and local leaders
-
Develop skills in communication, teamwork, and animal‑handling
-
Reduce stress through time spent outdoors and with animals
-
Support adoption efforts by helping dogs stay socialized, exercised, and ready for new homes
