PEACHTREE CITY, GA (Nov. 1, 2021) – Thousands of attendees shared in the history and education features of this year’s 17th annual World War II Heritage Day at Falcon Field in Peachtree City, Ga. History buffs, families and young children enjoyed a trip back in time, complete with Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Georgia vintage WWII aircraft. This year’s program honored all Rosie the Riveters, the women who worked in American factories during WWII. Three actual Rosies attended and spoke with the audience gathered in the Warbird Museum hangar.

The crowd enjoyed warbird rides, military vehicles on display, food trucks, a PX and living-history displays and presentations. Hands-on education activities were provided by the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force and Redwood Learning. Other participating organizations included the Atlanta History Center, Kennesaw State University Museum of Holocaust and History Education and the National Infantry Museum. The Airbase is currently restoring a Stearman biplane in honor of the Rosie the Riveters, and volunteers demonstrated techniques being used in the restoration.

“We were pleased to host about 3,000 people on Saturday, with a large number of families taking part in our hands-on demonstrations, stage presentations and numerous displays,” said CAF Airbase Georgia Leader Jim Buckley. “Our goal was to connect people with their history, especially World War II, and our members and participants made that happen. Many guests also were able to fly in our restored vintage aircraft throughout the day.”

WWII Heritage Days is the oldest and largest WWII and 1940s-themed event in Georgia. This year the CAF Airbase Georgia museum joined the WWII Heritage Trail in Georgia – one of 10 stops throughout the state. The Airbase programs) have been focusing on education, with a mission to inspire the next generation of pilots, aviation mechanics and citizens.

“CAF Airbase Georgia operates World War II aircraft to honor the Greatest Generation, the heroes at home and in battle whose unprecedented efforts won WWII,” Buckley said. “We have seven operational aircraft and the Stearman restoration project underway. We have created a strong reputation in our community and throughout the aviation industry because of our commitment to our mission, which includes stimulating interest in aviation careers for young people.”

About the CAF Airbase Georgia Warbird Museum
The CAF Airbase Georgia, based in Peachtree City, Ga., was founded in 1987. The Airbase, one of the largest units of the Commemorative Air Force, maintains and flies seven WWII aircraft including a P-51 Mustang, an FG-1D Corsair and rare types such as the SBD Dauntless dive bomber and P-63A Kingcobra. The unit, composed of 350 volunteers, is part of the CAF, a tax-exempt organization that relies on contributions of time and funds to carry out its mission. Membership is open to anyone age 18 years and older.
